Things to do in Denmark with kids

Try these top 10 things to do in the Great Southern with the kids these school holidays

Spring has officially arrived, bringing with it plenty of sunshine and good times. As it warms up, why not hit the road with the family and do some exploring? Denmark, Walpole and Albany are great places to visit, with heaps of family-friendly activities on offer. To get you inspired, here are some of our favourite things to do in and around Denmark with kids (plus a couple of extras if you’re planning a trip to Albany or Walpole):

  1. Picnic by the lake

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy a picnic in the sun, surrounded by nature. Lucky for you, we know a delightful family friendly place to eat in Denmark, seven days of the week. We’re open 10am-5pm every day of the school holidays (restaurant is closed King’s Birthday Monday), so come and enjoy a family feast by the lake (picnic blanket optional). Pre-order a take-away picnic hamper by 10am and you can be sitting by the lake, or at the beach or back at home (if the weather is not great) enjoying your yummy picnic hamper.

  1. Reach new heights at the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk

Located 15 minutes from Walpole, the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk offers an absolutely magical experience perfect for young and old. Suspended a giddy 40m above ground, the park’s wheelchair-friendly bridge will guide you through the treetops of an ancient tingle tree forest, while on the forest floor you’ll find large tree trunks (some big enough that they could house a car).

  1. Enjoy sun and sea at Greens Pool

Need an activity to keep the big and little kids busy? Pack a picnic (or pickup a takeaway picnic hamper from us!) and head out to Greens Pool at William Bay for the day. It’s a spectacular part of the coast that offers a spectacular view, a beautiful beach and swimming area. You can also explore Madfish Bay and Elephant Rocks.

  1. Play at Kwoorabup Community Park

The Kwoorabup Community Park is a great spot to visit with the kids, as it has an adventure playground designed for natural exploration and active adventure. Located behind the hospital in Denmark, the park also has barbecue facilities and numerous walking trails surrounding it.

  1. Paddle down the Denmark River

One of our favourite things to do in Denmark with kids is to meander down the tranquil Denmark River, which is lined by giant karri trees and is home to a plethora of wildlife. We suggest launching your kayak or canoe at Berridge Park or the Denmark Rivermouth (where you can also hire a watercraft if you don’t have your own).

  1. Try and find the Denmark River Fairy Doors
A new and fun thing in Denmark to do with kids. It’s a great way to get out and about, get some exercise and fresh air. At least 12 Denmark River Fairy Doors can be found along the Mokare Heritage Trail. The first one can be found near the main Denmark bridge on Albany side and is situated every few minutes, 4 minutes or less until the last one situated at the start of the river mouth.
You can try to find them on your own, which might be a bit hard, or you can use the app what3words, which will lead to their location, within 3 to 6 square metres, all can be easily viewed close to the pathway. It’s a great way to spend some time in nature, it’s fun and its free!
  1. Feed Farm Animals at Denmark Animal Farm

A must visit when in Denmark with kids is the Denmark Animal Farm. There are lots of activities, including bottle feeding the baby animals at 3pm everyday. You get your own bag of feed on entry for hands on feeding in the paddocks plus they have a gift shop with handmade alpacca jumpers and more. This is a place your kids will love and they are open every day over the school holidays.

  1. Browse the Kwoorabup Community Markets

Operating 10am-2pm every Sunday at the Denmark Senior High School, the Kwoorabup Community Markets is your one-stop-shop for yummy street food, locally made crafts, homegrown produce and entertainment.

  1. Albany’s Historic Whaling Station

Heading to Albany? Find out just how big a giant sperm whale skeleton is, explore what’s below the deck of the Cheynes IV Ship and learn about Albany’s past as a whaling town at Albany’s Historic Whaling Station. Right around the corner you’ll also find an Australian wildlife park and wildflower garden.

  1. The Gap and Natural Bridge

Another Albany must-do, The Gap and Natural Bridge in Albany showcase the raw might and power of the Southern Ocean as it crashes into some of WA’s most unique topography. Safely watch the surging sea roar 40m below you from The Gap’s viewing platform, which hangs over the attraction’s coastal granite cliff.
